A useful monthly management report should do more than show you a set of figures. It should help you understand how the business performed, what changed and why, what needs attention, and what the numbers mean for the decisions ahead.

Receiving a profit and loss statement every month is not the same as having useful management reporting.

The figures may tell you what revenue, costs and profit were, but management still needs to understand what drove the result, whether profit translated into cash, what has changed materially, what remains unresolved and what requires attention.

A useful monthly management report brings those things together into one financial view of the business. The aim is not to produce more pages. It is to make the accounting useful to the people making decisions.

The examples above use fictional figures and is for illustration only. It shows the kind of information a useful monthly management report should bring together.
